Hobart runner, Grace Shafe, answered a few questions for us about starting running and using nutrition.

What sort of runner would you describe yourself as:

I spent such a long time telling myself I “couldn’t run”, until a friend said to me “it is literally just putting one foot in front of the other – anyone can run”. I’ve taught myself to love it and I absolutely do it for fun. Because I have a slightly unhealthy competitive streak, I’ve found myself signing up for fun runs and races and get a lot out of having a goal, and something to work towards. Mostly, I run to support my mental wellness. It helps me to manage stress, get some time out in nature, and to switch off from my kids’ constant demands for snacks.

What race(s) have you recently completed?

I love to participate in fun runs around Tassie. This year I did Run the Bridge, Point to Pub & City Casino.  I also ran my first full marathon (Sunshine Coast) which was a huge achievement and something I never thought I’d attempt, let alone complete.

Which and how many gels did you consume before and during the race?

For the marathon this year, I used one at the start of the race and every half an hour throughout. So about 9 gels total.

Why did you choose Moor Gels?

I ran the Great Ocean Road half marathon in 2022, and that was my first time using gels. Moor wasn’t around then, so I used another brand throughout my training and on race day. I was stoked when I discovered Moor. They taste great and they never leave me feeling unsettled. I didn’t cramp at all throughout the marathon, or any of my long runs, which was likely thanks to the sodium content in the Moor gels. I also love supporting a Tassie company that values sustainability.

What is a tip that you can give someone that has recently taken up distance running?

Fuel well! Listen to your body (and a good playlist). And do it for fun.
Eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet, and fueling early and steadily throughout long runs is what prevents a blowout at the end. I surprised myself when I was able to pick up my pace and come in strong in my last few kms of the marathon. But it really came down to having enough energy from getting gels in early and consistently throughout the race.
